Raw Wool Fleece

Raw Wool Fleece

We go to great lengths to keep our sheep's wool fleece in premium condition. Our sheep free range the idyllic rolling hills and woods of Southwest Wisconsin's Driftless Region; they enjoy a wide variety of naturally grown pasture and forest plants.  Because of this you will occasionally find small bits of organically grown vegetation in their fiber.  We do not coat or cover most of our sheep, this requires more effort in our feeding practice.  The un-coated raw wool fleeces that are exposed to the sun’s touch adds interesting color variation to the natural colored wool fleeces.  Our wool is high quality.  From the shearing floor it is well skirted, to remove any soiled and undesirable wool; this means that you receive only premium wool fleece.

Our wool fiber has placed in the top of the Medium and Long wool Divisions of the Hand spinners class at the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival Fleece Show for both the colored and white raw wool fleece.

Most of our crossbred wool fiber falls into the medium crimp category.  This is a good wool fleece for spinning and felting.  Our flock is a make up of various breeds, crosses selected for their beautiful wool fleece. Salish, Merino, Border Leicester, English Leicester, Cotswold and Blue Faced Leicester are a few of our sheep breeds.  The cross of Fine Wool breeds with the Long Wool breeds creates a medium wool that is easy to work with and has the wonderful Long wool luster.

We also maintain a flock of purebred Cotswold sheep. The Cotswold sheep breed is a rare heritage breed that is listed as Threatened by The Livestock Conservancy. Their lustrous fleece is similar to mohair with a silky feel and dyes beautifully. We are proud to participate in the

Shave 'em to Save 'em challenge through The Livestock Conservancy.

Our ewes and rams are shorn in the spring and fall. The lambs are shorn in fall.  All of our raw wool fleeces are not pictured on the website.  If you are interested in a specific type or color just contact us, we may have it.

Because some of our wool fleeces may be larger than you need, we will gladly split any fleece weighing over 3 pounds in half. Prices shown are for the fleece only, please contact us to determine shipping costs.  We ship via USPS priority mail.

An interesting wool fact is that as sheep age their wool fleece color changes, just as people do.  Some sheep turn gray faster than others, some as soon as their first year.  This means that no two fleeces are alike, even from one particular animal from one year to the next.  In our flock we find that the darkest fleece usually comes from the youngest animal.

Most of our white wool fleece have the luster of the long wool, the fleeces shimmer in the sun.  These are beautiful in their natural color or will work great in your dyeing projects.  We have a variety of white fleeces from both the Blue Faced Leicester X and Cotswold sheep.

I would be glad to send more photos of any fleece.
